Ranvir, Konkona heading towards spiltville

Another ideal couple of Bollywood is going through rough patch. According to an insider, all is not well in Ranvir Shorey and Konkana Sharma’s paradise. Their two years old married life hit the rough patch. The speculation of their differences came into forefront when Ranvir and Konkana arrived separately during the premiere of Arjun Kapoor starrer ‘Ishaqzaade’ and sat seven rows away from one another.
Ranvir Shorey and Konkona Sen Sharma not only arrived separately but also sat at a distance from one another. The show ended at 11 pm, but Ranvir and Konkana left separately in their individual vehicles. During the intermission, the duo did not even speak to one another. They behaved as if they were strangers. Their indifference raised several eyebrows. An eyewitness said, “The most shocking part was that both of them did not even look at each other during the entire screening and the time they were at the same venue”. When asked Konkana just avoided the question but Ranvir said, “We are a couple, not conjoined twins. We cannot possible come and go anywhere together. Besides it is none of your business”.
The duo got married in 2010 in a private ceremony after dating for many years. Ranvir and Konkana were blessed with a baby boy in 2011.

‘Fatso’: Movie Review (2012)

Movie Review (2012)
 Film: “Fatso”
Cast: Ranvir Shorey, Gul Panag, Purab Kohli and Neil Bhoopalam
Director: Rajat Kapoor
Rating:  3/5

Some fine actors, who know how to look at home even when placed in outlandish circumstances, carry this quaint tale of love, death, separation, resurrection and reparation to the level of a fairly engaging comedy.
Films about near-death and after-life have a tendency to be flippant in tone while showing a world beyond the one that we know. It’s the same fear of the unknown that makes us laugh loudly when we are in a pitch-dark room looking for an exit.
This romcom makes its way out of the comfort zone of a love triangle (actually, quadrangle, and then one more angle added somewhere down the line), gets sassy about laughing all the way to after-life and then comes down to earth with a soft thud.
There are no sharp curves or twists in the plot. Even when Purab Kohli goes to a place close to heaven, his dialogues with his hosts up there (Brijendra Kala and gang) resemble a high-school debate on how to fill up the admission form rather than an existential discourse.
“Fatso” is at best a sweet harmless comedy about Purab Kohli’s character almost dying and returning to earth to assume his obese friend Ranvir Shorey’s body. Yup, that’s it.
The main challenge in the narration is to convince the grieving girlfriend (Gul Panag, sweet and restrained) that Purab is not who he looks like though he now looks like Ranvir Shorey, 40 kilos fatter than usual. The complications are kept at a bare minimum. The love quadrangle is played out at a manageable octave, which you know, will ensure a comfortable ending for all.
One can see that the narration comes to a dead-end, no pun intended. Left with no precise way to conclude the love triangle, the film simply asks Ranvir to take over. He delivers a discernibly improvised I-love-life monologue which ends with a cute kiss with Gul. That’s how you shut all protest up when life threatens to get complicated.
You simply shoo away all the misgivings and the dark patches that present themselves in the course of life and cinema. And you simply celebrate the magic of the here-and-now.
That’s what “Fatso” does with the least amount of fuss. It is not a film that pushes far enough in any direction, dark or light. But manages to make sufficient space in its range of vision to ensure that the characters don’t appear contrived .
There are no laugh-out-loud or sob-out-hard moments in the film. The tragedy of the girl losing her lover on the eve of their marriage is drowned in a pool of mock, surreal situations created more from a sense of mischief than profundity. But the film is fun to watch. It makes the right moves and noises. No one speaks out of turn. And you don’t come away from the film offended in any detail.
Technically, the presentation and packaging are reasonably neat. The film is shot in apartments rather than on sets. That helps to make you believe these are real people. Not actors who have just mugged their lines on the sets.
“Fatso” is a natural, sweet, tangy and tender rom-com about a near-dead lover and a pretender. A just-right ensemble cast makes the proceedings look larger than laugh.
Don’t go looking for “It’s A Wonderful Life” and you may come away quite happy with this film.

Life Ki Toh Lag Gayi Movie Review (2012)

Too many cooks spoil the broth, they say. That's basically the case with Rakesh Mehta's 'Life Ki Toh Lag Gayi', which burns its fingers trying to tell a few too many stories, and basically trying to be a smarter film than it really is.
Mehta's film, for which he's also penned the story and screenplay, tries its best to relate the story of four different characters, and what they go through on one particular day when their tracks collide, albeit just in the passing.
There's Salman, played by Kay Kay Menon, whose father, the 'bhai' of Mumbai, and mother, have just been murdered in cold blood, leaving him thirsting for revenge from rivals. Amol, on the other hand, played by Ranvir Shorey, has just returned from a grueling run as a chef in London, only to discover that his girlfriend, who he has been slogging for, has left him for another man. Amol finds solace in his friend Ghosh, Pradhuman Singh, a death-obsessed junkie who impresses the idea of suicide upon him. Meanwhile, Neha Bhasin, as Dolly Saluja, has come to Mumbai from Chandigarh with dreams of becoming a movie star, only to find that she has no chance here and no money to make it out of here either, leaving her to con her way out. And finally, there's ACP Rajbir, a spirited Haryanvi cop in Mumbai's crime branch, played by Manu Rishi, trying his best to find an elusive consignment of cocaine brought in by Nigerian peddlers, only to repeatedly earn flack from the commissioner, his only support being his mother, who he runs back to repeatedly on the telephone.
The film is a gigantic effort on Mehta's part to tie all these stories together. That he doesn't manage to do so convincingly is obvious because there simply isn't any common ground here for him to find. The incohesive, nay, incoherent plot falls apart the moment the film starts trying to relate the stories simultaneously. With few moments that can hold one's interest, and sparse humour for those laugh out loud moments, the film becomes even more difficult to sit through. The biggest failing here is for the film's talented editor, Namrata Rao here, who, in a moment of weakness, loses the plot quite literally, peppering the film with rough cuts and jumps.
On the acting front, Manu Rishi holds fort as ACP Rajbir, and is clearly the star of the film, offering the film's funniest moments. The talented actor is perfectly cast in an otherwise imperfect film. Marathi actor Kishore Kadam deserves special praise for playing Rajbir's comic foil and cop friend, Bhonsle. Kay Kay Menon does a fair job as Salman, though his edgy, serious role never fits in with the humourous tone the film is supposed to be holding. Neha Bhasin as Dolly hardly makes an impression, while Ranvir is completely wasted. Pradhuman Singh had a good start in 'Tere Bin Laden', but has followed it up with a series of hamming roles, which is also the case here. Jackie Shroff, Asrani, Sharat Saxena and Tom Alter have short cameos which add little to the film's appeal.
The film's music and background score, by Vinay Jaiswal, fails to make the mark, and frequently cut into the narrative.
Overall, though the film has a fair premise and a couple of good performances, director Rakesh Mehta muddles up the affair with his rough execution. Perhaps he'd have had better luck telling just two stories instead of four. In any case, the final result is that as it stands now, 'Life Ki Toh Lag Gayi' is a film that's quite hard to sit through, if not for the likes of Kay Kay Menon, and most importantly, Manu Rishi.
